“We need a video” is one of the most expensive sentences in marketing — because it usually means five different things to five different people. A commercial, a corporate video, and a brand film are not interchangeable. They have different jobs, different budgets, and different payoffs. Here is how to tell which one you actually need.

The commercial

A commercial exists to sell, fast. It is short (usually 15 to 60 seconds), sharply focused on a single message, and built to run as paid media — broadcast, streaming, social, or pre-roll. Production values are high because the piece has to grab attention in the first few seconds and hold it. If your goal is to drive a specific action to a wide audience, this is your format.

Use it when: you have a product launch, a promotion, or a campaign with media budget behind it.

The corporate video

Corporate video is the broad, practical workhorse category. It covers executive messages, product explainers, recruiting videos, training content, event recaps, and internal communications. The audience is usually more specific — employees, prospects, partners, investors — and the goal is to inform, align, or persuade rather than to advertise. Corporate video is where most businesses get the most day-to-day value.

Use it when: you need to explain something, onboard someone, position a leader, or communicate clearly with a defined audience.

The brand film

A brand film is the most cinematic of the three. It is less about what you sell and more about who you are — your mission, your values, the feeling you want people to associate with your name. A great brand film anchors your homepage, opens your keynote, and makes people care before they ever look at your product. It is an investment in emotion and identity, and when it lands, it works for years.

Use it when: you are defining or elevating your brand, entering a new market, or want a signature piece that captures your story.

The supporting cast

A few other formats are worth knowing, because they often deliver the highest return per dollar:

  • Testimonial videos. Real customers telling real stories. Nothing builds trust faster, and they are relatively affordable to produce — especially when batched.
  • Recruiting and culture videos. Show top candidates what it is really like to work with you, and sell them before the first interview.
  • Product and explainer videos. Make something complex clear — essential for tech, biotech, and any business with a learning curve.

How to match the video to the goal and budget

Start with the outcome, not the format. Are you trying to sell a specific thing, communicate with a specific group, or shape how people feel about your company? That answer usually points to commercial, corporate video, or brand film respectively. Then match the budget to the stakes: a broad paid campaign or a signature brand film justifies a bigger investment, while an internal update or a batch of testimonials can be produced efficiently.

The good news: you do not always have to choose. A single well-planned production day can capture footage for a brand film, several corporate pieces, and a handful of testimonials at once — multiplying the value of every hour on set.
